Oscar season is here, and of course the categories I’m the most excited about are Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. I’d like to discuss the role of sound editing and mixing as it relates to sound design. Even though sound design has been around for over 30 years, it’s still considered relativity new and has been rolled into the sound editing category.

Everyone is flocking to see Avatar. Even though this film has made incredible strides in digital 3D animation, one of the most important components of Avatar is the sound design.

A few years back I was asked to design the sound for the horror/thriller “The Book”. It’s about a young man who was driven insane by an ancient book that was possessed by the spirit of a sorceress. This was sort of an odd film since it relied on implied drama, not necessarily drama played out on the screen.
