One of the first thing an audience notices, when watching any sort of film, reading a book, playing a video game, etc., is whether the characters seem real. All of the special effects in the world can't save a film with unbelievable characters. But even films with a shoestring budget can be fascinating to watch if the characters are meaningful, exciting and can make the audience care about them.
