INTERVIEWING YOUR CHARACTER
To further create a three dimensional, well rounded character for your story, here are some questions you can ask yourself (and your character) as if you were interviewing him or her.
How would they respond to the following questions if you sat them down? The more fleshed out these answers are, the richer your character will become and start to “live”.
How old is your character?
If your character could choose a symbol to represent them, what would they select?
What is your character’s name? If your character has a nickname, what are they called? Who named them and why?
Is your character an introvert or extrovert? Why?
What hair color does your character have? How do they like to wear their hair? How does this style make them feel?
Has your character ever been in a fight? What were the circumstances? Do they look for fights or avoid them?
Are they a day or night person? How does either make them feel?
Does your character have a best friend? Who is it? What qualities does this friend have that they admire?
Who comprises your character’s family? What kind of family is it? Where was your character born?
Does your character have a “power place”? Is there a place that provides comfort in stressful times?
What is your character afraid of? Why?
What’s your character’s favorite color? Flavor? Song? What mood does it evoke for them?
What is the one thing your character knows but no one else does?
What animal can you equate with your character? Why?
Is there a dominant emotion that the character feels mostly? What natural phenomena can your equate to your character’s state of mind?
Is there a place your character would like to travel to? Where and why?
What’s your character’s “security blanket”?
What’s your character’s favorite “catch phrase”?
If your character was a movie title, what would they be?
Does your character walk or have any unique behavioral characteristics?
What’s your character’s dream job? What do they do now?
If your character travelled to another planet, what would they say about human beings in general?
What’s your character’s best & worst quality?
What do other people think about the character? How do they react to them when they enter a room?
What makes your character the most angry? Happiest?
Does your character have a special gift/talent?
If you were to ask your character any of these questions, how would they react to being interviewed? Would they cooperate with you?
